Explore Allentown’s architectural gems — both new and old
Explore some of Allentown’s beautifully crafted homes and businesses during the 37th annual West Park House Tour, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
Presented by the West Park Civic Association, the self-guided tour showcases 13 properties, including 19th- and 20th-century residences that have been repurposed or restored to their historic grandeur, stretching from Allentown’s West Park Historic District to center city.
Marvel at majestic staircases, elegant crown molding and opulent stained glass windows when visiting one-of-a-kind structures, ranging in style from Federalist Revival to Tudor Revival, near West Park, 15th and 16th streets between Linden and Turner streets.
Other eye-catching features include bright and airy sunrooms; built-in bookcases; glass chandeliers; hardwood flooring inlaid with bands of walnut, cherry and mahogany wood; an English-style pub and wet bar; a billiard room with oak wainscoting; Moravian tile, two-story veranda; and koi pond.
In addition to architectural gems near West Park, the tour also will spotlight impressive downtown properties, including the newly constructed Five City Center, a 13-story glass and steel office building featuring a “living wall” with 2,200 plants and 14 species in the lobby; and Centre Square Lofts, a five-story, 95unit residential building featuring gourmet kitchens, over-sized windows, a rooftop lounge and game room.
Recently renovated properties include Vault 634, the former Lehigh Valley Trust building that was converted into a luxury event venue — complete with a marble staircase, basement speakeasy and five original Hess chandeliers; and RB Collection, a former home of several notables businesses, including A&B Meats and Schadt & Co. Wholesale Grocers, that was converted into an auto restoration shop that also features Palazzo Reale luxury apartments on the building’s upper floors.
Advance tickets, $15, can be purchased online at westparkca.org/events or at several Allentown area businesses, including C. Leslie Smith, Phoebe Floral, Hummus House and RE:find.
You also can purchase tickets on the day of the event for $18 at Episcopal Church of the Mediator, 1620 W. Turner St., Allentown.
RB Collection auto restoration shop and Palazzo Reale luxury apartments will be featured in the 37th annual West Park House Tour, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.
