Bas­ket­ball: Jaylen Brown scored 20 points, Kemba Walker added 15 and the U.S. routed Ja­pan 98-45 in the Group E fi­nale at the World Cup in Shang­hai. The U.S. (3-0) is bid­ding for an un­prece­dented third con­sec­u­tive ti­tle. G Mar­cus Smart missed the win over Ja­pan with a left quad strain and is day to day. He missed most of the team’s train­ing in Au­gust with a calf strain on the same left side and played only 11 min­utes in a 93-92 OT vic­tory over Turkey on Tues­day. Smart’s Celtics team­mate, G Jayson Ta­tum, sat out against Ja­pan with a sprained an­kle. He will miss the game against Greece.

Golf: Paul Casey of Eng­land de­fied windy and rainy con­di­tions to shoot an open­inground 6-un­der 66 and take a one-stroke lead at the Eu­ro­pean Open in Ham­burg, Ger­many. Matthias Sch­wab of Austria was se­cond . ... Third-ranked Dustin John­son un­der­went arthro­scopic surgery to repair car­ti­lage dam­age in his left knee and is ex­pected to re­turn this fall. John­son is ex­pected to be play­ing again be­fore the Hero World Chal­lenge in the Ba­hamas and the Pres­i­dents Cup in Mel­bourne in early De­cem­ber.

NHL: The league and Play­ers’ As­so­ci­a­tion will meet again Friday in New York to con­tinue collective bar­gain­ing ne­go­ti­a­tions. Play­ers have un­til Sept. 15 to de­cide whether to ter­mi­nate the cur­rent CBA ef­fec­tive a year from now. Owners had the same op­tion and chose not to end it . ... The league will ex­pand its reach into Rus­sia with a new stream­ing agree­ment with Yan­dex that will more than triple the amount of games broad­cast there. The pre­vi­ous agree­ment called for 15 games a week to be broad­cast.

Soc­cer: Italy needed two late goals to se­cure a 3-1 road win over 10-man Ar­me­nia and ex­tend its per­fect start to Eu­ro­pean Cham­pi­onship qual­i­fy­ing. Sub­sti­tute Lorenzo Pel­le­grini broke a tie with a goal in the 77th minute and An­drea Belotti scored his se­cond of the match in the 80th minute for Italy, which im­proved to 5-0 in five group­play matches. Cap­tain Gior­gio Chiellini, Lorenzo In­signe, Bryan Cris­tante, Cris­tiano Bi­raghi and Mat­tia De Sciglio sat out the match with in­juries. Spain also stayed per­fect with a 2-1 win over Ro­ma­nia.

Also: RFK Sta­dium, the for­mer home of the NFL’s Red­skins, Ma­jor League Base­ball’s Na­tion­als and Senators and D.C. United of the MLS, will be de­mol­ished by 2021, Wash­ing­ton of­fi­cials an­nounced. The va­cant, de­te­ri­o­rat­ing struc­ture opened in 1961 as D.C. Sta­dium and was re­named in 1969 for Robert F. Kennedy the year af­ter he was as­sas­si­nated.
