Franklin’s first recruiting class makes its presence felt in NFL

- By Mark Wogenrich

James Franklin assembled his first Penn State recruiting class during one chaotic month in early 2014. Considering that, the group’s NFL hit rate has been impressive.

Ten players from the class are on NFL rosters, with several others seeking spots as free agents. Leading the group is quarterback Trace McSorley, drafted by the Baltimore Ravens and among eight NFL rookies this season from Penn State.

Tight end Mike Gesicki (Miami), cornerback Grant Haley

(New York Giants) and safety

Troy Apke (Washington) are among those entering their second NFL seasons. In addition, linebacker Troy Reeder, who was part of the 2014 class, made the Los Angeles Rams’ 53-man roster. Reeder in 2016 transferred to Delaware, where he played three seasons.

Further, one player from the class is playing in Canada. Quarterback Michael O’Connor is in his rookie season with the Toronto Argonauts. O’Connor transferred in 2015 from Penn State to the University of British Columbia, where he led the team to the Vanier Cup, Canada’s national championship.

One more player from that class still active is running back

Mark Allen, who received a sixth season of eligibility and transferred to Duquense. The Dukes open their season Saturday.

A total of 32 former Penn State football players (and one lacrosse player) are on NFL rosters to begin the 2019 season. Twenty-seven of them are on active rosters, three each with the New York Giants, Tampa Bay and Tennessee.

Here’s the list.
