‘Xanadu’ stage parody coming to Easton’s State Theatre
A stage send-up of the muchmaligned 1980 roller-disco movie “Xanadu” starring Olivia Newton-John and the music of Electric Light Orchestra is coming to Easton’s State Theatre, it was announced Monday.
Also coming is an EP release show by Lehigh Valley Christian singer Amanda Danziger, in a special stage-on-stage presentation.
“Xanadu,” which is the national touring production of the Tony Award-nominated Broadway roller-skating hit musical, will be performed at 3 p.m. Sept. 28.
It stars Jinkx Monsoon, winner of Season 5 of the TV drag-queen reality competition “RuPaul’s Drag Race,” and season seven finalist Ginger Minj.
Tickets, at $26-$79 and $100 for VIP with premium seating and post-show photo experience with the stars, are on sale at the State Theatre box office at 453 Northampton St., Easton, at 800-999-STATE or 610-2523132.
Danziger’s concert, with supporting act Cory Shelly, will be at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 6. The show will be presented stage on stage, in which both the performer and the audience are seated on the theater’s stage for an intimate performance.
Tickets are $15 advance and $20 at the door.
The film “Xanadu” was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for Newton-John’s song “Magic,” a No. 1 gold hit. The ELO song “All Over the World” hit No. 13.
But it also was nominated for Golden Raspberry Awards for Worst Picture, Worst Actress for Newton-John, Worst Actor for Michael Beck, Worst Original Song for “Suspended in Time” and Worst Screenplay, and won Worst Director for Robert Greenwald.
The parody Broadway play was a surprise hit, and was nominated for several Tony Awards. It played for nearly a year on Broadway.
Danziger’s show will mark the official release of her EP, “Head & Heart,” which she says has been in the works for three years. The concert is described in publicity material as “a night to worship.”
Shelly is a singer-songwriter from eastern Pennsylvania. He has released a 2016 album, “Hope for the Broken,” and an EP, “Oh Marie,” in 2017.
