Al­len­town man takes plea, son sen­tenced in drug case

An Al­len­town man pleaded guilty, while his son was sen­tenced, both for distribut­ing heroin in Car­bon County in 2015 and 2016.

Robert Birch, 46, and son Deovonie Birch, 23, both of Al­len­town, ap­peared Fri­day in fed­eral court in Scran­ton. A grand jury in­dicted both men in Septem­ber 2016 af­ter an in­ves­ti­ga­tion by the U.S. Drug En­force­ment Ad­min­is­tra­tion, state po­lice and Al­len­town po­lice.

Robert Birch pleaded guilty to lead­ing a con­spir­acy to dis­trib­ute 100 to 400 grams, or 4,000 to 16,000 re­tail bags, of heroin from New York and Al­len­town sup­pli­ers. He faces five to 40 years in prison.

Deovonie Birch was sen­tenced to two years and seven months in prison. He ad­mit­ted to be­ing a sub­dis­trib­u­tor for his father and mov­ing 60 to 80 grams, or 2,300 to 3,000 re­tail bags, of heroin.
