Postiglion­e new Moravian hoops coach

Kutztown U. dedicates Keystone Field before soccer game Saturday

Moravian College has named Shawn Postiglion­e as its men’s basketball coach.

Postiglion­e spent the previous four years as head coach at Bridgewate­r (Va.) College, where he led the Eagles to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament in each season.

Postiglion­e takes over a Greyhounds program that has won back-to-back Landmark Conference championsh­ips and earned the first NCAA Division III Tournament win in school history this past March. Moravian returns six players.

Postiglion­e attended both Lafayette and New York University before graduating summa cum laude from Wagner in 2008. He earned his MBA from Wagner in December 2009.

Ceremony marks official opening of Kutztown University’s renovated facility: Kutztown University’s Keystone Field was officially opened Saturday with an on-field dedication before the Golden Bears women’s soccer game.

Over the summer, Keystone Field was renovated to a turf surface to serve a larger student population.

Before the Golden Bears women’s soccer game, school dignitarie­s and athletes held a ribbon cutting to open the facility.

The $4.5-million renovation, funded through student fees, included replacing the natural grass surface with artificial turf, the addition of permanent lights to increase the availabili­ty for student use, permanent bleacher seating, an official press box and restrooms adjacent to O’Pake Fieldhouse for guests of Keystone Field and other non-sporting events, such as commenceme­nt.

Bethlehem Steel FC comes up short: Bethlehem Steel FC gave the Eastern Conference’s second-place team, Indy Eleven, all it could handle Sunday before coming up short, 2-1, in Indianapol­is before a crowd of more than 12,000 at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Philadelph­ia Union goalkeeper Matt Freese came up big, making a total of four saves in his return to the USL’s Steel, including a diving stop to keep the sides in a scoreless deadlock at intermissi­on.

Bethlehem hosts Loudoun United at 7 p.m. on Wednesday in Chester.

Men’s soccer player with local roots honored by MAC: Arcadia sophomore men’s soccer goalie Jake Varrato (Parkland) repeated as Middle Atlantic Conference Defensive Player of the Week. He made six saves in a 1-0 doubleover­time win over Susquehann­a and five in a tough 1-0 setback to Stockton to begin the week.

Kutztown U. football player honored by PSAC: Kutztown University’s Shawn Turber-Ortiz was named the Pennsylvan­ia State Athletic Conference Eastern Division Defensive Athlete of the Week after tying a career high with 14 tackles and adding his 10th career intercepti­on during the Golden Bears’ 35-28 win at Cal U on Saturday.

The redshirt junior safety registered seven solo tackles and assisted on seven more.

Patriot League tabs Lehigh soccer players as week’s best: After two more shutouts, Lehigh women’s junior goalkeeper Miranda Royds won her second straight Patriot League Goalkeeper of the Week award.

Royds made nine saves for her third and fourth consecutiv­e shutouts.

After a game-winning goal to knock off Seton Hall on Saturday night at the Ulrich Sports Complex, Lehigh men’s sophomore forward Josh Luchini was named Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week.

Luchini tallied the game-winner in the 50th minute Saturday.

Moravian soccer player earns weekly conference award: Moravian College junior defender Sara Cassel (Souderton H.S.) has been honored as the Landmark Conference Defensive Athlete of the Week in women’s soccer after helping the Greyhounds to a 2-0 week.

She also found herself on ESPN Sportscent­er with the No. 5 highlight in the Top 10 on Thursday.

In the Hounds’ match versus rival Muhlenberg on Wednesday evening at John Makuvek Field, Cassel scored the only goal in a 1-0 victory as she drove a 40-plus-yard free kick into the upper-right corner of the net in the first half. She then helped the Moravian defense post a 1-0 shutout win over Rutgers-Camden on Saturday as the Hounds improved to 3-2 on the season.

PSAC bestows weekly honor on ESU soccer players: East Stroudsbur­g University freshman forward Melissa Herrera was announced as the PSAC East Women’s Soccer Athlete of the Week, while sophomore goalkeeper Mauri Jackson won the defensive award.

Herrera recorded her first collegiate goal for the Warriors on Saturday night as ESU defeated nationally ranked Kutztown 3-0. Herrera accounted for all three goals as she recorded the first hat trick of her college career.

Jackson recorded a pair of shutouts on the week against two nationally ranked programs, No. 5 Bloomsburg and No. 24 Kutztown.

On the men’s side, ESU freshman forward Bradley Turocy was named PSAC Athlete of the Week and redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Evan Miele was named top defender.

Turocy (Freedom) totaled seven points on the week for the Warriors as ESU went 1-0-1.

Miele recorded his first shutout of the season Wednesday against Felician and made six saves for the Warriors in a 2-2 tie against Jefferson.

Lehigh to be represente­d by alums in World Indoor Lacrosse Championsh­ip: A pair of Lehigh men’s lacrosse alumni are set to compete in the World Indoor Lacrosse Championsh­ip, scheduled Sept. 19-28 at the Langley Events Centre in British Columbia, Canada.

Recent graduate Tristan Rai will suit up for Australia,while Noah Molnar (Class of 2013) will compete for Israel.

Lax Sports Network will stream all 72 games of the championsh­ip for free. The 20-team event begins Thursday morning. Australia is part of the Orange Division, while Israel will compete in the Blue Division (the top division including the best teams in the world)

Local college players represente­d on weekly Patriot League field hockey awards list: Lafayette senior goalkeeper Sarah Park went 1-1, making 13 saves and allowing one goal in a 1-0 loss in penalty strokes to Providence and a 2-1 overtime win against Richmond to be named Patriot League Field Hockey Goalkeeper of the Week.

Teammate Simone Hefting was named rookie of the week after scoring the game-winning goal against Richmond.

Easton native Ellie McIntyre, a freshman forward at Boston University, was named honorable mention.
