Tell legislators to put an end to gerrymandering

The Morning Call - - TOWN SQUARE -

Writing about gerrymandering for The Washington Post on Sept. 9, former Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger warned: “All of this is bad for democracy … All Americans, regardless of party, ought to be outraged over the way it debases free elections and fair results.”

The nonpartisan Redistricting Reform Commission appointed by Gov. Wolf learned Pennsylvanians are outraged over gerrymandering. According to the commission, the public expressed the following concerns:

1. Politicians abuse their power when creating district maps.

2. They do so by manipulating the redistricting process in their favor.

3. They do so out of the public view.

At the polls and at community fairs/festivals, thousands of Lehigh Valley residents voiced similar concerns and signed the Fair Districts PA petition in support of the creation of an independent citizens redistricting commission.

We have a chance on Sept. 18 to let the House State Government Committee know that an independent citizens redistricting commission must be included in any redistricting reform legislation. You can help — attend the hearing, write a letter to the editor, or write/visit your legislator and tell them that politicians must cease picking their voters.
