Willett wins at Wentworth

Former Masters champion Danny Willett outplayed Jon Rahm in the final group Sunday at Wentworth and closed with a 5-under 67 to win the BMW PGA Championsh­ip by three shots for his first victory on home soil in England.

Willett won for the seventh time in his career and moves back into the top 50 for the first time in two years.

He finished at 20-under 268. Rahm, tied with Willett going into the final round, shot 70 and finished alone in second. Rory McIlroy, who opened the European Tour flagship event with a 76, followed with rounds of 69-65-67 and tied for ninth, his 16th finish in the top 10 in 21 starts worldwide this year.

■ Sebastian Munoz of Colombia made a 15-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole to force a playoff, and then beat 2018 rookie of the year Sungjae Im of South Korea with a par on the first extra hole to win the Sanderson Farms Championsh­ip in Jackson, Miss., for his first PGA Tour victory. Munoz, who closed with a 2-under 70, made it two straight weeks for South American winners, following Joaquin Niemann at the Greenbrier . ... Rocco Mediate birdied his last two holes for a 6-under 64 and won the Sanford Internatio­nal in Sioux Falls, S.D. It was Mediate’s first senior title in three years and fourth overall. Auto racing: Ferrari driver Sebastian Vettel of Germany took advantage of an early pit stop to win the Singapore Grand Prix for the fifth time and end a 13-month winless streak in F1. It was the four-time series champ’s first victory since the 2018 Belgian Grand Prix.

College football: Wisconsin moved into the top 10 for the first time this season, landing at No. 8 in The AP poll after a weekend during which seven ranked teams lost. The top of the poll remained mostly unchanged with Clemson staying No. 1, followed by three SEC teams: No. 2 Alabama, No. 3 Georgia and No. 4 LSU. Ohio State edged past Oklahoma to No. 5.

Soccer: Trent Alexander-Arnold and Roberto Firmino scored to help Liverpool remain perfect in six English Premier League matches and remain atop the table with a 2-1 win over host Chelsea. Liverpool leads two-time defending champ Manchester City by five points.

Tennis: U.S. Open runner-up and topseed Daniil Medvedev of Russia beat No. 4 seed Borna Coric of Croatia 6-3, 6-1 to win the St. Petersburg Open . ... Team Europe retained the Laver Cup . ... Topranked Naomi Osaka won her first singles title since the Australian Open in January with a victory in Osaka, Japan.
