The Morning Call

Pavelski adjusting to new life with Stars

-

Joe Pavelski recorded one secondary assist in his first four games with the Stars since signing a three-year, $21 million contract. Change is hard, and the longtime Sharks forward is quickly realizing he’s not in San Jose anymore.

“There’s a lot of simple adjustments,” Pavelski said Tuesday. “It’s not completely natural. But it’s at a good spot where I feel it’s right there, right around the corner. Just keep going, get a little production and you get that confidence to really kind of take it to another level.”

Stars coach Jim Montgomery likened it to Hall of Fame pitcher Steve Carlton needing to get accustomed to new catchers when he moved around the majors.

“It’s the nuances of the game, of getting to know people, that comfort level of understanding when this guy has the puck, I go here, I’m going to get the puck,” Montgomery said. “That just takes time.”

Pens’ Galchenyuk to IR: The Penguins placed forward Alex Galchenyuk on IR after he aggravated an undisclosed injury that limited him during the preseason.

Galchenyuk joins center Evgeni Malkin and forward Bryan Rust and Nick Bjugstad on IR for the Penguins, who are off to a 1-2-0 start.

Galchenyuk, acquired in an offseason trade with the Coyotes, has two assists in three games.

Penguins forward Patric Hornqvist sat out practice. Hornqvist left a 4-1 loss to the Jets on Tuesday night after getting hit by a shot off the stick of teammate Kris Letang.

The Penguins recalled forward Adam Johnson from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL.

Kings notch 1st win: Drew Doughty scored a power-play goal 50 seconds into OT to give the Kings a 4-3 win over the host Flames on Tuesday.

The Kings picked up their first victory under new coach Todd McLellan after falling 6-5 in their season opener to the host Oilers on Saturday.

Tyler Toffoli had a goal and an assist, with Sean Walker and Ilya Kovalchuk also scoring for the Kings. Jack Campbell made 26 saves.
