Jags owner expects Ramsey will play

-

Jaguars owner Shad Khan expects cornerback Jalen Ramsey to play this week.

Khan told a financial news site, The Street, he had a “heart to heart” with the disgruntled defender earlier this week and said Ramsey is scheduled to play against the Saints (4-1).

“Well, I think, he’s going to be playing this week,” Khan said Thursday. “So hopefully you’ll tune into the Saints game. I think it’s something you’ve got to balance what’s good for the team with what the individual maybe wishes might be. And I think we’ll be able to kind of formulate it here.

“I met him a couple of days ago, had a heart to heart, and I think we’ll be able to come to what makes sense for all.”

What that means exactly remains unclear.

Ramsey was slated to practice for a second consecutive day Thursday after missing seven straight because of illness, back tightness and the birth of his second daughter. His back caused him to miss the last two games. He saw a specialist Monday in Houston.

The two-time Pro Bowl selection told the Uninterrupted’s “17 Weeks” podcast last week that he’s dealt with back soreness at times during his NFL career. He appeared on the team’s injury report twice in 2017 with a back injury but played both weeks.

Ramsey requested a trade last month following a heated argument with coach Doug Marrone on the sideline in Houston and a much-less-public exchange with personnel chief Tom Coughlin after the game.

Raiders cut Nelson: The Raiders cut wide receiver J.J. Nelson after he missed three of the last four games with injuries.

The Raiders signed Marcell Ateman to take Nelson’s spot on the 53-man roster. Ateman was on the practice squad the first four weeks and played briefly Sunday against the Bears before being waived to make room for the recently acquired Zay Jones.

Nelson signed a $1 million contract in free agency but struggled to stay healthy in his only season with the Raiders. He hurt his knee early in the opener and sat out the next game. He returned in Week 3 and caught a TD pass against the Vikings but missed the last two weeks because of the knee.
