A look back at Lehigh Valley sports stories over the years from May 14. 2006 — Joe Matteo throws a five-hit shutout to lead Lehigh to a 5-0 win over Bucknell, giving the Mountain Hawks their first-ever Patriot League baseball title and first-ever NCAA Tournament berth. Central Catholic’s Nick Bet gives Matteo all the runs he would need with a two-run firstinnin­g single, and Liberty grad Matt McBride adds two hits, scores two runs and knocks in a run.

2006 — Moravian reaches the NCAA Division III softball regional finals for the fourth straight year, but Ramapo holds off the Greyhounds (37-9) 6-5 at Salisbury, Md., to advance to its first-ever NCAA Division III World Series.

2001 — Parkland wins its third straight Mountain Valley Conference girls soccer title and extends its winning streak over league opponents to 48 with a 5-1 playoff victory over Stroudsbur­g. The Mountainee­rs do manage to snap Parkland’s shutout string at 10 straight games, however.

1991 — Central Catholic grad Billy McCaffrey, who announced earlier in the month he would leave Duke after his sophomore year ended, says he will transfer to Vanderbilt for his final two college basketball seasons.

1986 — After six years as an assistant coach at Lehigh, Wayne Grube returns to high school coaching when he is named the head football coach at Wilson. Before his stint with the Engineers, Grube had compiled an 84-44-6 mark in 12 seasons at Easton.

1980 — Ty Stofflet, 38, announces a broken left wrist will sideline him from the upcoming softball season, the first such occurrence for him in more than 20 years.

1971 — Easton becomes the second school to win four straight District 11 track championsh­ips when the Red Rovers outpoint Freedom 54.5-49 for the Class A team title. Mickey Collins leads the way by setting district records in the mile (4 minutes, 19.8 seconds) and 880 (1:57.8), and he later wins the PIAA Class A championsh­ip in the mile.

1966 — After unofficial­ly breaking the record in practice several times, Nazareth’s Mario Andretti officially sets an Indianapol­is 500 qualifying mark of 165.899 mph to clinch the pole for the upcoming race. Andretti also sets a one-lap mark of 166.328 mph.

1965 — Parkland’s Gary Wagner sweeps the Class A 100- and 220yard sprints for the third straight year in the District 11 track and field championsh­ip meet at ASD Stadium.

1960 — Greg Brown’s record height of 11 feet, 2 1⁄4 inches in the pole vault, the meet’s final event, lifts Wilson to its 10th Lehigh-Northampto­n League track and field title in 11 years. The Warriors finish with 48.5 points to edge Parkland (45).

1960 — Center Valley’s Eddie Sachs records the first 147-mph lap at the Indianapol­is Speedway with a qualifying time of 147.251 mph during time trials for the Indianapol­is 500.
