Anthony Casciano’s five shutout innings helps second-seeded Pius X get its first-ever District 11 baseball title with a 3-1 win over top-seeded Notre Dame-East Stroudsburg in the Class A championship game at Coca-Cola Park. Later, Joe Taves strikes out nine to help lead Catasauqua, which qualified for districts with a victory in its last regular-season game, dump three-time defending champion Pine Grove 8-2, the Rough Riders’ first title since 1997.

Palisades freshman Krista Morrone strikes out 14 in a six-inning 10-0 perfect-game victory over Philadelphia CAPA (13-3) in the opening round of the PIAA Class 3A softball tournament.

The Lehigh Valley Extreme, which is scheduled to begin its inaugural season in the United Hockey League in the fall, announces it will play early season games at Hersheypark Arena while awaiting completion of a yet-tobe-started arena at Ninth and Hamilton streets in Allentown. Four Andrettis — father Mario, sons Michael and Jeff, and nephew/cousin John — start the Miller 200 at Milwaukee, the first Indy car race for Jeff. Brother Michael loses his chance at victory when, while running in the lead, he runs out of gas with two laps to go and finishes fourth.

Father and son claim the checkered flags at Wisconsin State Fair Park raceway when Mario Andretti wins his fourth Miller American 200 and his 21-year-old son, Jeff, earns his first Super Vee victory. Mario takes home a $38,274 paycheck, Jeff a $5,000 prize. Jeff ’s older brother Michael finishes 19th in the feature race.

Lafayette officially dedicates its new $4.4-million Allan P. Kirby Field House. The new facility includes swimming and diving pools in the Ruef Natatorium, a 200-yard indoor track, and a 3,500-seat basketball gym, tripling the capacity of the Leopards’ former home, 1,200-seat Alumni Memorial Gym.
