TODAY YOUR VOTE WILL DECIDE
Today’s primary election is a case of better late than never. Originally scheduled for April 28, it was postponed because of the coronavirus outbreak. The number of mail-in ballots soared and some polling sites changed, but here’s what you need to know and some issues you may face.
MAIL-IN BALLOTS, NEW POLLING SITES
You still have time to get your mail-in ballot in by today’s 8 p.m. deadline. It’s too late to mail it, but you can take it directly to the elections office in your county. In Lehigh County, that’s at 17 S. Seventh St., Allentown. Northampton County voters can go to Northampton County Courthouse at 669 Washington St., Easton.
Some longtime polling places, mostly in Lehigh County, moved because of the coronavirus. You can find where to vote in person by plugging your address into the state website pavoterservices.pa.gov/Pages/ PollingPlaceInfo.aspx.
DO I NEED TO WEAR A MASK?
Both counties are encouraging in-person voters to wear a mask and to keep 6 feet away from others while waiting in line. Lehigh County voters are asked to bring their own pens. Northampton County voters are encouraged to wear surgical gloves when using touchscreen voting machines. 7TH CONGRESSIONAL DISTRICT GOP NOMINATION
Two former Lehigh County commissioners face off in the biggest Lehigh Valley race. Dean Browning and Lisa Scheller are running in the Republican primary to see who will face Democratic U.S. Rep. Susan Wild in November. Browning has pitched himself as a Donald Trump supporter, but Scheller received Trump’s endorsement.
131ST PA. HOUSE DISTRICT
Four Republicans are vying for the right to replace state Rep. Justin Simmons, who did not seek reelection: Lehigh County Commissioner Nathan Brown, Coopersburg Borough Councilman Joe Ellenberger, Pennsburg Mayor Vicki Lightcap, and Milou Mackenzie, a small-business owner and the mother of state Rep. Ryan Mackenzie.
138TH PA. HOUSE DISTRICT
Tony Tarsi, principal of Wilson Area Intermediate School, and Ann Flood, operator of a nonprofit foundation and chairwoman of the Greater Bath Area Chamber of Commerce, are running to replace state Rep. Marcia Hahn, who did not seek reelection.
