Sculley brothers top all-time list

- By Tom Housenick

(Editor’s note: This is the latest in a series ranking the Lehigh Valley’s all-time best on the mat.)

The Sculley family has been referred to as the first family of wrestling in Bethlehem.

Perhaps no one stood out more than Pat Sculley, who won three consecutive Pennsylvania Catholic Interscholastic Athletic Association titles from 1970-72, then won a PIAA championship as a senior in 1973. He was Bethlehem Catholic’s first state medalist after Catholic schools were allowed to compete in the PIAA tournament beginning in 1973.

Sculley’s unique combination of four state titles followed up brother Tom’s three PCIAA titles from 1968-70.

The Sculleys were integral parts of the Golden Hawks winning five consecutive PCIAA team titles from 1968-72. Bethlehem Catholic didn’t join the PCIAA in wrestling until 1966, then finished second to Notre Dame-Green Pond in 1967.

They also are among the best the Lehigh Valley has produced in the PCIAA era, which started in 1964.

Notre Dame-GP had the first glorious run by winning three consecutive PCIAA team titles from 1965-67, then was fourth in 1968.

Two-time PCIAA champs Bob Scheetz, Bob Lux and Mike Danyczek were part of the Crusaders’ stellar stretch of dominance.

Here’s a look at the area’s best in that era of Catholic schools (Bethlehem Catholic, Central Catholic and Notre Dame-GP):
