“The High Note” “Taking a Shot at Love” “Dark Waters”
(8 p.m., HBO): A good cast elevates Nisha Ganatra’s somewhat familiar 2020 comedy-drama about a longtime personal assistant (Dakota Johnson) to a veteran R&B singer (Tracee Ellis Ross) who yearns for a career of her own as a music producer. Kelvin Harrison Jr. (“Godfather of Harlem”) co-stars as an aspiring young musician who catches her attention. Johnson’s mom, Melanie Griffith, has a cameo; Ice Cube, Jonathan Freeman, June Diane Raphael, Bill Pullman and Eddie Izzard also are featured.
(9 p.m., Hallmark): Jenna (Alexa PenaVega) was a professional dancer until an injury ended her career. Now, she teaches dance, and her sports agent cousin hopes she may be able to help a hockey client, Ryan “Coop” Cooper (Luke Macfarlane), recover from a very similar sports injury. Jenna needs the money, so she takes the gig, although Coop is initially really skeptical about this unconventional therapy. Eventually, though, they get on the same page, and as he makes impressive strides in his recovery, the pair strike romantic sparks as well.
(9 p.m., Showtime): Based on a 2016 article in the New York Times Magazine, this 2019 legal thriller from Todd Haynes (“Far From Heaven”) dramatizes corporate defense lawyer Robert Bilott’s (played by Mark Ruffalo) 20year legal battle against the chemical manufacturing corporation Dupont. Initially summoned to a community in West Virginia to investigate a series of unexplained animal deaths, Bilott uncovers evidence that Dupont has contaminated the town with unregulated chemicals. The fine cast also includes Anne Hathaway, Tim Robbins, Victor Garber, Bill Camp, Mare Winningham and Bill Pullman.
