Girls’ Wrestling Day
State Sen. Scott Martin (R-Lancaster) is putting forward a resolution declaring Sunday, March 21, as Pennsylvania Girls’ Wrestling Day and acknowledging the efforts of SanctionPA to help establish girls wrestling as a sanctioned sport by the PIAA. A formal announcement will be made shortly on the senate floor in Harrisburg.
It is the same day USA Wrestling is hosting the PA Girls State Championship at Spooky Nook in Manheim.
There are nine girls varsity programs in the state, including Easton and Executive Education Academy. The PIAA requires 100 before considering sanctioning the sport.
SanctionPA, whose leaders include Parkland assistant coach Brooke Zumas and Liberty grad Pat Tocci, are leading the charge to help high school officials go through the process to sanction girls wrestling.
Martin was unbeaten and the 1990 PIAA Class 2A champion at Lancaster Catholic.
Valley Girlz Wrestling Club
The grand opening of Valley Girlz Wrestling Club is from 5 to 8 p.m. on March 2 and 4, at Executive Education Academy Charter School. This is an opportunity for female wrestlers of all ages and those girls interested in the sport to meet, greet and roll with local experts.
The staff will focus on nutrition, cardio, strength and technique. There are three-, six- and 12-month contracts with a $10 drop-in fee. Private coaching available. Staff: Juan Garcia, Tammy Santiago, Matt Mirth, Franco Zaccaro and Josselinne Campos.
