This is no April Fool’s joke.

Phillies fans might be permitted to return to the stands for Opening Day at Citizens Bank Park on April 1, Philadelphia Health Commissioner Thomas Farley said Tuesday.

“We did receive requests from the Sixers, Flyers, and the Phillies [to allow fans] and we are looking at our event limits,” Farley said during a public briefing. “Right now, large numbers of fans would not be allowed under event limits, but we are likely to ease that back somewhat effective on March 1.”

Capacity of the nearly 43,000-seat stadium would likely be limited by state rules as the Phillies open the season against the Atlanta Braves.

“We cannot be less restrictive than what the state allows,” Farley said. “All of those proposals would allow more people than what is currently allowed by the state, so I can’t guarantee .... whether those requests will be granted because it’s not in my authority. It’s going to be up to the governor.”

Along with limits on spectators at sporting events, the city is reviewing other restrictions that are set to expire Monday.

“I can’t guarantee anything (regarding fans in the stands) on Opening Day,” Farley added. “But I can say that it’s likely there will be some fans in the stands at the Phillies home opener. But how many is going to depend not just on us but also what the state decides.”

The Lehigh Valley IronPigs, the Triple-A affiliate, open the year at home against Syracuse on Tuesday, April 6, at Coca-Cola Park.

It is the start of a six-game series against the Mets.

Game times, promotion schedules and fan access in Allentown will be announced at a later date.
