A look at East Super Regional 2A, 3A brackets

Connor Bevan was not supposed to be in Charles Chrin Community Center for Saturday’s Class 3A Northeast Regional wrestling tournament.

The Freedom junior was going to watch the livestream or TV broadcast of the event he just missed out qualifying for.

All that changed late Friday afternoon, when there was a scratch in the 138-pound bracket and Bevan got the call as the alternate.

The Patriot made the most of his opportunity by finishing third and qualifying for Saturday’s East Super Regional at Quakertown High School.

Everyone knows who last Saturday’s stars were.

They dominated their way to regional championships: Northampton’s Jagger and Dagen Condomitti, Notre Dame-GP’s Brett Ungar and Brandan Chletsos; Bethlehem Catholic’s Tyler Kasak and Evan Gleason.

Under them, there are budding stars such as Nazareth’s Charlie Bunting and Bethlehem Catholic’s Cael McIntyre. They had a lot of regular-season experience last year as freshmen but are now tasting extended postseason preparation.

Under them are others still who are grinding their way to survival every week. Most of these first-year varsity wrestlers already have more postseason experience than regular-season mat time.

Northampton’s Austin Noe (113), Quakertown’s Mason Ziegler (113), Pennridge’s Sam Kuhns (113), Pottsville’s Parrish McFarland (126), and Nazareth’s Noah Okamoto (152) and Sean Kinney (285) are first-year varsity wrestlers.

Noe had one varsity match before the District 11 tournament. Okamoto and Kinney had none.

Nazareth’s Dominic Wheatley (132) and Ryan Fairchild (160) were given spot regular-season matches before making the lineup this season, which consisted of one varsity dual until the individual postseason.

Nazareth’s Chase Levey (215) had to wait two years before returning to the postseason because of an injury.

And then there’s Northampton senior Patrick Snoke (126). He had to wait until his last year to crack coach Seth Lisa’s lineup. He had one varsity match until this year.

It has been a heck of a baptism by fire for all these wrestlers who have dreamed of this moment for years. They are doing everything they can to keep the dream alive.

Hershey is one step away.

A top-four finish at Super Regional Saturday is all that stands in their way.

Pairings for the Classes 2A and 3A East Super Regionals are out. The 3A event is at Quakertown High. The 2A tournament is at Pottsville’s Martz Hall.

The top four from each super region advance to the PIAA Wrestling Championships on March 12-13, at Hershey’s Giant Center.
