2001: East Stroudsburg South senior Sam Segond becomes the first discus thrower in District 11 history to top the 200-feet mark when he wins the Class 3A crown with throw of 202-0, the fifth best in the country.

2006: Bethlehem Catholic junior

Joe Kovacs shatters the 31-year-old District 11 Class 2A discus record with a throw of 176 feet, 5 inches, to take the gold during the district meet at Blue Mountain. Kovacs’ throw is more than 7 feet better than the previous mark of 169-1 set by Pen Argyl’s Moris Pagne in 1975.

2001: Lehigh leads defending national champ Oklahoma 2-1 after 4 ½ innings but the Sooners roar back to take a 9-2 win, spoiling the Mountain Hawks’ NCAA Division I softball debut. Lehigh is eliminated the next day by N.C. State 2-1.

1995: Emmaus (18-1-2) beats Freedom 4-0 for its fifth East Penn Conference girls soccer championship in six years.

1986: Salisbury’s Dan Reichenbach wins the long jump (23-2 ½, breaking a record set in 1968), the high jump (district record 6-7 ¾) and triple jump in the District 11 Class 2A track and field championships.

1971: Mike Bouonassi becomes just the second athletic director in Liberty High history when the Bethlehem Area School Board approves him to succeed Phil Phillippi, who held the position for 41 years until retiring. To take the job, however, Bouonassi gives up his post as the school’s soccer coach, where he recorded a 126-8-16 mark in 13 seasons.

1961: Catasauqua wins its first

Lehigh Valley League baseball title since 1937 by beating Stroudsburg 8-5 to finish the league season with a 6-1 record.

1956: Pitching all 11 innings of Whitehall’s 3-2 Lehigh Valley League win over Emmaus, Jack Sedovy strikes out 26 Green Hornets, walks two and allows just one hit — a two-run home run by Ron Hamscher in the first inning. Emmaus’ Dick Christofaro allows just seven hits while also going the distance.
