The Morning Call

AROUND THE HORN

-

■ Angels: Shohei Ohtani hit a two-out, two-run HR in the ninth inning and the Angels rallied past the Red Sox 6-5 on Sunday in Boston, ending a four-game losing streak. Red Sox closer Matt Barnes (1-1) retired the first two batters in the ninth before giving up a bloop single to Mike Trout. Ohtani followed with his major league high-tying 12th HR, tucked just inside the Pesky Pole in right field. It was Ohtani’s second HR of the series and stopped the Red Sox’s three-game winning string. Ohtani’s next pitching start was pushed back a day, to Tuesday against the Indians, because of fatigue.

■ Giants: Alex Wood pitched six innings while keeping his perfect record intact and Mike Yastrzemski hit a game-sealing HR in the ninth as the Giants beat the host Pirates 4-1. Wood (5-0) gave up one run while scattering eight hits. He struck out six and walked one as NL West-leading Giants gained a split of the fourgame series. It has been a resurgent season for Wood, who went a combined 1-4 with a 5.96 ERA in 2019 and 2020 with the Reds and Dodgers.

■ Rays: Manuel Margot, Willy Adames and Brandon Lowe homered off Marcus Stroman, leading the Rays over the visiting Mets 7-1 for a three-game sweep. The Rays have won four in a row. Two-run HRs by Margot in the fourth and by Adames in the fifth built a 4-0 lead, and Lowe led off the sixth with his seventh HR this season. Josh Fleming (3-3) allowed up one hit in five scoreless innings, an infield single by Jeff McNeil leading off the game.

■ Astros: Chas McCormick had a two-run single as part of a fourrun eighth, Lance McCullers Jr. threw six scoreless innings and the host Astros beat the Rangers 6-2 to close out a four-game sweep. It was the Astros’ sixth straight victory. McCullers scattered five hits and struck out five.

■ Brewers: Freddy Peralta struck out eight over six scoreless innings, Avisail Garcia homered and the Brewers blew most of an 8-0 lead before holding on to beat the visiting Braves 10-9. Peralta (4-1) held the Braves to two hits and a walk, while recording eight strikeouts for a third consecutive appearance. Since allowing a season-high five runs over four innings against the Phillies on May 5, the righthander has thrown 13 scoreless innings, allowing three hits and a pair of walks during that stretch. Lorenzo Cain had three hits and scored twice and Kolten Wong went 3-for-5 and scored three times. Reigning NL MVP Freddie Freeman hit a grand slam in the Braves’ seven-run seventh for his 11th HR, second in the NL.

■ Extra innings: Mitch Haniger hit two doubles and the host Mariners snapped Shane Bieber’s record strikeout streak, beating the Indians and their ace 3-2. Bieber (4-3) had fanned at least eight in 20 straight games, but the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner fell short with seven. He was pulled after issuing his fourth walk, and finished his shortest outing of the season at 4 ⅔ innings trailing 3-0. The victory was the Mariners’ third straight following a seasonhigh five-game losing streak.
