IronPigs split doublehead­er with Buffalo Bisons

Ricardo Sanchez scattered six hits in four innings and Austin Wynns hit a controvers­ial grand slam to lead the IronPigs to a 7-5 win in Game 2 for a Sunday doublehead­er split with the Bisons at Coca-Cola Park.

Wynns’ third homer of the season went foul down the leftfield line, according to TV replay.

Buffalo manager Casey Candaele and developmen­t coach Jeremy McGuiggan were ejected for arguing the call.

Dustin Peterson had a solid day for the IronPigs (19-16), who lost four of six in the series. He had two hits and drove in three runs in the opener and singled, doubled and walked in the second game.

Yairo Munoz doubled and homered in the second game for Lehigh Valley, which is 14-4 when leading after five innings.

Mark Appel escaped a basesloade­d, one-out jam in the seventh inning of Game 2 by striking out pinch hitter Stevie Berman and getting Gabriel Moreno on a grounder.

How they scored: Game 1

Top 3: Eric Stamets walked and Nathan Lukes singled with one out. Samad Taylor’s single scored Stamets. Cavan Biggio walked before Jordan Groshans’ groundrule double scored Lukes and Taylor. Cullen Large then singled to score Biggio and Groshans. Bisons 5-0.

Bottom 3: Drew Maggi doubled and scored on Matt Vierling’s single. Wynns walked. Dustin Peterson then singled in Vierling and Wynns. Bisons 5-3.

Top 5: Groshans, Large and Otto Lopez walked. Kellin Deglan’s fielder’s choice scored Groshans. Large scored on a wild pitch. Bisons 7-3.

Top 7: Lopez walked, took second on a grounder and scored on Josh Fuentes’ single. Stamets followed with a two-run home run.

Bisons 10-3.

Bottom 7: Wynns walked and Darick Hall reached on an error. Peterson’s sacrifice fly scored Wynns. Nick Maton’s sacrifice fly scored Hall. Bisons 10-5.

How they scored: Game 2

Top 2: Large singled and scored on Logan Warmoth’s double. Bisons 1-0.

Bottom 2: Munoz doubled and Will Toffey walked. Dalton Guthrie loaded the bases when his sacrifice bunt did not produce an out.

Wynns hit a grand slam two batters later. IronPigs 4-1.

Bottom 3: Munoz hit a solo home run with one out. IronPigs 5-1.

Bottom 4: Wynns walked and scored on Peterson’s double. Maton’s single scored Peterson. IronPigs 7-1.

Top 5: Taylor singled and Large walked with one out. After a double steal, Lopez’s grounder scored Taylor. Warmoth’s double scored Large. IronPigs 7-3.

Top 6: Cavan Biggio doubled and scored on Groshans’ single. IronPigs 7-4.

Top 7: Lopez doubled with one out and Warmoth walked. Fuentes’ single scored Lopez. IronPigs 7-5.

Up next

After an off day Monday, Lehigh Valley heads to Worcester for a six-game series starting at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday. The WooSox won four of six in the IronPigs’ first trip to Polar Park in April.
