LEHIGH VALLEY FLASHBACK

-

Bobby Weaver of Easton High School made a strong run to make the 1976 U.S. Olympic wrestling team. Weaver went on to win a gold medal at the 1984 Olympic Games at Los Angeles.

A look back at Lehigh Valley sports stories over the years from June 21.

2011: Lehigh Valley defeats Burlington County (New Jersey) 5-3 at Citizens Bank Park to win the Carpenter Cup baseball title. It is Lehigh Valley’s first since 2001 and third overall in the franchise’s history. Central Catholic’s Seth Stoudt, Nazareth’s Karl Keglovits and Notre Dame-Green Pond’s Shane Simpkins combine for six shutout innings of relief. Nazareth’s Drew Hercik hits a game-tying two-run double in the fourth inning and Pleasant Valley’s Drew Borger follows one inning later with a goahead RBI single.

1981: Rain shortens the Van Scoy Diamond Mines 500 at Pocono International Raceway to only

305 miles (122 laps), with A.J. Foyt claiming his record ninth 500-mile victory before a crowd estimated at 25,000-30,000. The race was overshadowed by the feud between CART and USAC that led to the absence of most of CART’s top drivers with the exception of Tom Sneva, who finished 16th.

1976: Bobby Weaver’s bid to earn a spot on the U.S. Olympic freestyle wrestling team falls short when the Easton High School star is eliminated from the trials after losing twice to third-ranked Bill Rosado of Arizona State at 105.5 pounds. However, Allen High graduate Stan Dziedzic advances to the 163-pound finals with two wins over NCAA champion Leroy Kemp.
