Reynolds to be feted as ‘People’s Icon’

-

The People’s Choice Awards plans to recognize actor Ryan Reynolds’ versatile career with its annual “The People’s Icon” honor, organizers announced Thursday.

The Canadian-born actor is known for starring in the R-rated “Deadpool” superhero movies, the classic romantic-comedy “The Proposal” and family films such as “Pokemon: Detective Pikachu” and “Free Guy.”

“In any endeavor — whether it’s acting, producing, marketing or business — Ryan Reynolds has the unique ability to create joy and authentically connect with his audience,” said Cassandra Tryon, a senior vice president at NBCUniversal. “He’s received many accolades over the years, but it’s these innate qualities that make him so beloved.”

Reynolds, 46, is already a three-time recipient at the People’s Choice Awards, having won favorite movie superhero and favorite action movie star in 2012 for “Green Lantern” and favorite movie actor in 2017 for “Deadpool.”

The People’s Choice Awards, hosted by Kenan Thompson, will air Dec. 6 on NBC and E! Network, with fans voting for winners in music, movies and TV categories.

CNBC axes Smith newscast: CNBC is canceling Shepard Smith’s nightly newscast after two years, with the network’s new president KC Sullivan saying he wants to focus on the network’s core strength of business news.

Smith, who is leaving the network, will have his last telecast sometime later this month. He did not have any immediate comment.

Smith landed at CNBC after abruptly leaving Fox News Channel in 2019, establishing a general interest news show that aired at 7 p.m. Eastern on weeknights.

His show has averaged 222,000 viewers this year, down slightly from 2021, the Nielsen company said. For the last three months of 2020, “The News with Shepard Smith” had 280,000 viewers. By contrast, Fox News’ Jesse Watters had 3.4 million viewers in the same time slot on Tuesday, and MSNBC’s Joy Reid had 1.3 million, Nielsen said.

Sullivan said in a staff memo a business news show will launch in the same time period early next year, but offered no other details.

MSNBC parts ways with MSNBC has cut Cross: ties with Tiffany Cross, an outspoken weekend host who provided a forum for issues important to the Black community.

A person familiar with the matter who was not authorized to comment publicly said the NBCUniversal-owned channel decided not to renew the contract of the host of “The Cross Connection.” An MSNBC representative declined to comment.

Cross, a political analyst and author, started in television as a producer for CNN and BET. Her appearances as a commentator on Joy Reid’s MSNBC program led to her getting a weekend slot on MSNBC in late 2020.
