LEHIGH VALLEY FLASHBACK
A look back at Lehigh Valley sports stories over the years from Nov. 14.
1997: Muhlenberg, in its eighth NCAA Division III men’s soccer playoff appearance in nine years, shocks host and No. seed 5-ranked Messiah 1-0 to reach the Mid-Atlantic Regional title game. However the Mules fall to Gettysburg 2-1 in overtime the next day.
1997: Unbeaten Strath-Haven (13-0) spoils Upper Perkiomen’s first trip to the District 1 Class 3A football title game with a 21-10 victory over the Indians (10-2). 1987: Nazareth rolls up 24 first downs while holding Wilson to one, and outgains the Warriors 348 yards to 70, yet loses the Colonial League game 14-7. Wilson scores one touchdown on a punt return and another after the Blue Eagles turn it over deep in their own territory. Nazareth commits five turnovers in the game.
1972: The squabble over the site of the Easton-Phillipsburg Thanksgiving Day game ends when the schools and the city of Easton reach an agreement on the collection of a 10% amusement tax, ensuring the 65th-annual game will be played at Lafayette’s Fisher Field. Perhaps due partly to the uncertainty over where the game would be played, the smallest crowd in years (12,500) turns out nine days later to watch Phillipsburg win, 15-13.
