The Morning Call

Midterm election had lessons for GOP

-

What have we learned from the midterm election?

First, the ill-timed Supreme Court Roe v. Wade decision benefited Democrat candidates more than the pollsters predicted. Second, voters were unwilling to vote for weak Republican candidates in spite of the inflation, border and crime issues. Third, Donald Trump’s influence in the Republican party continues to be a major negative.

If the Republicans want to fare better in 2024, then they better find a way to make Trump vanish from the political landscape. He is a polarizing, divisive figure and a threat to the long-term existence of his supposed party. Ron DeSantis appears to be the most logical choice to be the 2024 Republican candidate for the presidency. He possesses many of Trump’s good policy choices without the baggage of a child-like narcissist, and his leadership in Florida led to a very impressive performance by Florida Republicans on Election Day.
