1997: Northweste­rn survives to advance to the PIAA Class 2A East football semifinals by beating Harrisburg Bishop McDevitt 14-13 at Hersheypar­k Stadium. A potential tying extra-point by McDevitt hits the upright, and Mike Galdieri and Dave Kerschner combine for a fourth-down stop in the final minute at the Tigers 26-yard line. However, Central Catholic’s bid for a berth in the 3A East semis ends in a 32-21 loss to Manheim Central in Bethlehem.

1992: Chris Mason scores two first-quarter touchdowns and

Allen avenges a loss to Dieruff the previous week and wins the District 11 Class 3A football title with a 14-7 victory before 5,000 fans at J.Birney Crum Stadium.

1992: Tramont Evans’ intercepti­on at the goal line of a Lehigh “Hail Mary’ pass on the final play of the game preserves Lafayette’s 32-29 win over the Engineers and the school’s second Patriot League title before 18,725 fans at Fisher Field. Lafayette’s Erik Marsh ties the league record with 251 yards and breaks the mark for carries with 46.

1992: First-half goals by Jesse and Jerri Lucido lifts Emmaus (25-0) to a 2-1 win over Unionville (23-2-1) and the Green Hornets’ second straight PIAA Class 3A field hockey championsh­ip.

1987: A capacity crowd braves wind-chill temperatur­es of minus-20 to watch the final football game ever at Lehigh’s 74-year-old Taylor Stadium, the 123rd meeting between the Engineers and Leopards. Lafayette takes a 10-9 lead, but Lehigh quarterbac­k Mark McGowan scores on a 1-yard sneak with 5:08 left to lift the Engineers to a 17-10 victory and their first .500 season (5-5-1) since 1983.

1987: For the second straight night the East Penn Conference takes it on the chin as unbeaten Bangor gets two early touchdown runs from Rodney Heard and blocks a punt for another touchdown in a 28-7 victory over Bethlehem Catholic (9-3) in the District 11 Class 2A championsh­ip game. The win is the Slaters’ 17th straight over two years and caps a 12-0 season.

1972: Bobby Rigby records his ninth shutout and East Stroudsbur­g State College blanks Muhlenberg 4-0 to win the regional title of the first NCAA College Division soccer tournament and advance to the quarterfin­als against the University of Baltimore. The Warriors, who lose to Baltimore 3-0 eight days later, finish with a school-record 14-3-1 mark.

1957: A proposal to shift the Thanksgivi­ng Day game between Pennridge and Quakertown from Sellersvil­le to Lehigh’s 16,500-seat Taylor Stadium is vetoed by the Pennridge Athletic Committee after the team and students vote overwhelmi­ngly against playing the game on a neutral field.
