Boston suffers injury in South Carolina win

-

South Carolina coach Dawn Staley doesn’t think she’ll be without reigning national player of the year Aliyah Boston for too long, if at all.

Boston will be examined Monday after leaving the top-ranked Gamecocks’ 85-38 win over Hampton on Sunday with her right foot in a walking boot.

Staley said Boston was “questionable” going forward but added that the “team doctor wasn’t too, too concerned.”

“We’re going to be on the safe side,” Staley said.

South Carolina’s next game is Tuesday at home against No. 20 UCLA.

Boston didn’t return to the court for the second half after a hard fall prior to the break for the defending national champions. The most outstanding player of last spring’s NCAA Tournament was driving for the basket when she fell and took several moments to get up after getting fouled.

Boston, the 6-foot-5 senior, missed two foul shots and ran down the floor on defense. Staley then subbed out Boston, who walked toward the locker room.

She’s averaging 13 points and 10.6 rebounds in five games this season.

Baseball: The White Sox and free agent pitcher Mike Clevinger agreed to a one-year contract, according to reports. Clevinger, 31, was 7-7 with a 4.33 ERA last season for the Padres.

College football: Stanford coach David Shaw resigned Saturday night after finishing his 12th season at his alma mater with a 36-25 loss to BYU that dropped the Cardinal to 3-9. Shaw, 50, led Stanford to five double-digit win seasons, with three Pac-12 titles and Rose Bowl appearances in his first six years as coach. He finished with more wins than any coach in program history with a 96-54 record. But the Cardinal are 14-28 over the last four seasons. ... LSU QB Jayden Daniels has a sprained ankle, but coach Brian Kelly said he hopes he’ll be able to practice Tuesday ahead of the SEC championship Game against No. 1 Georgia on Saturday.
