Christmas Day has been a federal holiday since 1885. When Christmas Day falls on a weekend, some people get the closest regular workday off.
Here is a brief rundown of what is open and closed.
Financial markets: New York Stock Exchange and
Nasdaq closed Monday. The Federal Reserve is observing Christmas the Monday after, which means most banks will be closed.
Federal offices: closed Monday.
State government: State offices are closed Monday.
County and municipal offices: Northampton County closed Friday and will reopen at 8:30 a.m.
Tuesday. Lehigh County office closed Monday. Check with individual counties or municipalities.
LANtaBus, LANtaVan and LANtaFlex service will not operate Sunday. Regular service will resume Monday. Department of Motor Vehicles: All driver’s license and photo centers will be closed Saturday through Monday. Customers can still access all forms, publications and driver training manuals through PennDOT’s Driver and Vehicle Services website, www.dmv.pa.gov. Fine Wine and Good Spirits stores: All stores open at their normally scheduled start time and close by 6 p.m. Saturday. All stores will be closed Sunday. U.S. Postal Service, standard delivery services: No mail delivery Monday. Local post office locations will be closed Monday. Priority Mail Express mail will be delivered.
Libraries: The Allentown Public Library and the Easton Area Public Library are closed through Monday. Bethlehem Area Public Library is closed Saturday through Monday.
Major retailers: Many major retailers will be closed Sunday and open Monday. Grocery stores: Most stores will be closed Sunday and will be open Monday.
Trash pickup: Check with your municipality or your trash hauler.
