LEHIGH VALLEY FLASHBACK

-

A look back at Lehigh Valley sports stories over the years from Feb. 13.

2005: The second-largest wrestling crowd in Stabler Arena history — 5,828 — watches topranked Oklahoma State sweep the first five bouts en route to a 24-9 victory over No. 4 Lehigh. 1996: Down by eight points with 3½ minutes left, the Allentown College women’s basketball team roars back to beat previously unbeaten and fourthranked NYU 66-65 on Jen Kish’s basket with three seconds left. 1996: Bangor belts Pen Argyl 46-21 to wrap an undefeated Colonial League wrestling season and bring the school its first wrestling championship. 1991: Liberty wrestling coach Frank Gutierrez picks up the 300th victory of his 34-year career when the Hurricanes beat Central Catholic 37-24. 1981: Diane Everett scores 15 points to help Pleasant Valley end a 20-game Centennial League losing streak with a 4544 win over Northwestern.

1976: Despite scoring just two points in the first quarter, Bethlehem Catholic’s Mike Guman scores a school-record 48 points, breaking the school record from 1950 set by current Golden Hawks coach Bob Bukvics in an 89-59 win over Emmaus. Guman scored 19 points in the second quarter and 17 in the fourth.

1976: Trying to slow down powerful Northampton, Whitehall takes just one shot — a free throw — in the first half of their East Penn Conference game. But the Zephyrs fall behind 10-0 at halftime and 18-6 after three quarters en route to a 40-11 setback.

1976: Phillipsburg ends its 25-game boys basketball losing streak to Dieruff by beating the Huskies 63-45.

1971: Senior Frank Scagliotta, a former star at Bangor, breaks his own record with 16 assists in Muhlenberg’s 92-76 win at Ursinus.

1971: For the second time in a month, Liberty snaps a long wrestling winning streak, this time handing Saucon Valley its first loss in 38 matches in a 25-13 win over the Panthers. Liberty’s Ernie Gonzalez overcomes a 6-0 third-period deficit to tie defending state champ Don Rohn 6-6 — the first blemish on Rohn’s mark in three years — and John Fritz bests Dave Santoro 7-3 in a battle of unbeatens to give the undefeated Hurricanes (12-0) a 10-5 lead. Liberty, which ended Phillipsburg’s 56-match winning streak on Jan. 21, was also the last team to beat Saucon Valley early in the 1968-69 season. 1956: Andy Leh resigns after 30 years as Nazareth’s football coach. Under Leh, the Blue Eagles post a 160-73-18 record, win six outright titles and share six others in the first 21 years of the Lehigh-Northampton League, finish unbeaten three times and post a 25-game unbeaten streak between 1949 and 1952.
