Saucon Valley, Palmerton advance
Wilson’s Gibson scores milestone vs. Panthers
Shamel Gibson became the 12th player in Wilson Warriors boys basketball history to reach 1,000 points in his career by scoring 25 points Saturday night in a Colonial League quarterfinal at Saucon Valley. He scored 16 in the fourth quarter.
Gibson reached 1,000 points 41 years to the day that his coach, Mike Glovas, reached the milestone in 1982.
However, it was not enough to prevent host Saucon Valley from advancing to the semifinals with a 71-62 win.
Jack Robertson scored 21 points, Jacob Albert added 17 and Alex Magnotta chipped in 10.
The third-seeded Panthers improved to 18-5 and set up a semifinal with No. 2 seed Southern
Lehigh on Wednesday night at 6:05 p.m. at Catasauqua High School.
It was Saucon’s first tournament win since 2011 when the Panthers beat Salisbury in three overtimes for the championship.
Wilson, the defending league champ, lost its third in a row and fell to 13-10.
In Saturday’s other quarterfinal, Palmerton advanced to the league semis for the third straight year with a 64-42 win over Bangor.
The fourth-seeded Blue Bombers (18-5) will play No. 1 seed Notre Dame-Green Pond (19-3) in the other semifinal at 7:35 p.m. Wednesday at Catty.
Palmerton held Bangor to just eight points in the first half and got 22 from junior Matt Machalik and 14 from Brayden Hosier in its quarterfinal-round win.
The Blue Bombers improved to 3-7 all-time in the Colonial League tournament.
Bangor fell to 13-10 this season and 19-7 all-time in the league tourney.
