Ashley Lynn Kulick liked to color her hair — sometimes blue, sometimes green.

She was very protective of her Quakertown parents and siblings; she was the second oldest of five. And she volunteered at the local American Legion hall from time to time, according to Steven Gorman, a family friend.

“I could tell you she was a nice person, very mild-mannered, close to her family,” said Gorman, a family friend who is organizing a fundraiser on social media to help the family pay for Ashley Kulick’s burial expenses.

The 19-year-old Kulick, who died early Monday following a car crash in downtown Quakertown, also worked at DeSales University in housekeeping, according to Gorman.

Kulick was pronounced dead shortly after the 5:45 a.m. accident in which her car struck a railroad-crossing pole along the first block of West Front Street, borough police said.

While the Bucks County coroner said the woman’s car hit the post “at high speed,” police have not confirmed if Kulick was traveling too fast before the accident. The speed limit on West Broad Street, which is also state Route 313, is 25 mph.

Bucks Coroner Meredith Buck said Kulick died from blunt force injuries. She ruled the death accidental and is awaiting results from toxicological testing.

Meanwhile, Gorman is among those in the small community mourning the loss. He said Kulick and her siblings were among children of members who were raised in part at the local Legion and who would willingly help with serving meals or whatever was needed.

DeSales spokesperson Tom McNamara said Kulick began working Nov. 15 for the college.

“The University community is deeply saddened by Ashley’s death,” school president, the Rev. James Greenfield, said in a statement. “The students she worked with really appreciated her kindness and gentleness. DeSales will miss Ashley and we invite prayers for her family during this time of grief and sadness.”

Gorman was unsure Friday how much money had been raised thus far. “We’re trying to help out the family in this unexpected tragedy,” he said.

Gorman said checks should be written out to American Legion Quakertown Post 242; include “Kulick Family” in the memo. They can be mailed or dropped off at the American Legion, 610 E. Broad St., Quakertown, PA 18951.

The Naugle Funeral & Cremation Service in Quakertown is handling arrangements.
