A look back at Lehigh Valley sports stories over the years from Oct. 18.

2001: Katie Grant scores three goals, including the gamewinner with 3:44 left in the fourth overtime, to lift Lehighton to a 3-2 win over Parkland and the Indians’ fifth Mountain Valley Conference field hockey title in six seasons.

1996: Brian Schaffer, Andy Kessler and Chris Albeck each score goals as Southern Lehigh wins its 10th straight Colonial League soccer title with a 3-1 win over Palisades.

1991: Ric Schumacher goes over the 6,000-yard mark for his career when the Notre Dame-Green Pond quarterbac­k throws for 171 yards and two touchdowns in a 28-6 Centennial League win against Pocono Mountain in Swiftwater. Schumacher ends the game with 6,151 yards.

1986: Brian Lower’s 13-yard third-quarter touchdown run snaps Pen Argyl’s scoreless streak at 7 ½ games and helps Catasauqua to a 13-0 Colonial League win over the previously unbeaten Green Knights before more than 5,000 fans at Pen Argyl.

1975: Despite owning the statistica­l edge, Bethlehem Catholic’s 17-game unbeaten streak (16-0-1) comes to an end when a 50-yard fumble return to inside the Golden Hawks’ 5-yardline sets up the only touchdown in Woodrow Wilson’s 7-0 win in Levittown. Becahi outgains the Rams 179-66 and holds them to one first down.

1975: Freedom sophomore Susan Ramonat finishes second by one stroke in the PIAA girls golf championsh­ip at Hershey Country Club.

1966: The Phillies send Center Valley native Jimmy Schaffer, who hit .133 with a home run in eight September games with the major-league team, back to San Diego of the Pacific Coast League.
