Nazareth grad Brugler scores 30 in St. Joe’s win over UMass

The Saint Joseph’s women’s basketball team is on a roll and junior Talya Brugler is leading the way.

The Hawks are 22-2 overall, 11-1 and in first place in the Atlantic 10 Conference and have won nine straight – all conference games – after a 59-57 victory over George Mason in a battle for first place Thursday in Fairfax, Virginia.

The 6-foot-1 forward from Nazareth leads the team in scoring with a 16.6 average. She also leads in assists with 62 and is second in blocked shots with 20 and steals with 16.

Brugler was named Big 5 Player of the Week on Feb. 5 after scoring a season-high 30 points with seven rebounds and four assists in a 77-67 conference victory over Massachuse­tts on Feb. 3. She has had eight other games where she scored plus-20 points this season. She had 11 points in the George Mason victory, which moved her up to 14th place on the team’s career scoring list with 1,239 points.

Brugler was A-10 Rookie of the Year as a freshman and was a first-team selection last season. She is well on her way to another conference honor this year and is in the running for the league’s Player of the Year award.

Thomas Kitchell – Wake Forest men’s track (Notre Dame-Green Pond):

The senior has competed in the shot put in five events this winter for the Demon Deacons and he has won all five of them, including last weekend when he finished first at the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitation­al in Lynchburg, Virginia, posting a toss of 62 feet, 11 ½ inches. He finished second in the Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Championsh­ip last February. Kitchell has also competed in the weight throw this winter and has a second and a third.

Bobby Rosenberge­r III – St. Francis men’s basketball (Perkiomen School):

The 6-foot-5 freshman guard from Quakertown had the best game of his young college career to lead the Red Flash to a 72-63 Northeast Conference victory over Stonehill last Saturday in Loretto. He had a game-high 22 points and nine rebounds to lift the team to 8-16 overall and 3-8 in conference play. His previous best effort came in a 72-66 win over LIU when he had 21 points and nine rebounds. On the season, he played in all 24 games with 20 starts and is averaging 8.8 points with 44

assists.

Gio Germano – Niagara (N.Y.) men’s swimming (Emmaus):

The senior prepped for this week’s Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championsh­ip in Geneva, Ohio, with a solid effort in the Purple Eagles’ final dual meet of the season, a 177-110 loss to Gannon Jan. 27 in Erie.

Germano finished first in the 200 butterfly in 1:55.82

and swam a leg on the winning 200 medley relay with a time of 1:32.06. He finished second in the 100 butterfly (48.17) and seventh in the 100 backstroke (53.19) at last February’s MAAC title meet to help the team finish third.

Jake Jones – Ithaca wrestling (Saucon Valley):

The freshman was named State University of New York Rookie of the Week on Feb. 6 after winning three matches by falls in a quad meet against Williams, Wesleyan and Oneonta. The pins came at :51, 1:03 and 1:06 putting him in the top three in Division III NCAA in that category with 20 on the season. Jones is 29-10 on the season and is ranked third in his weight class. Ithaca is ranked 24 th in Division III. Jones will now prep for the Division III Regionals March 1-2 in Rochester, New York.

Daniel Lehr – Bentley men’s swimming (Liberty):

The freshman was named Northeast-10 Conference Rookie of the Week on Jan. 30 after a strong effort in a 186-89 victory over Bridgewate­r State Jan. 26 in a home meet in Waltham, Massachuse­tts. Lehr finished first in the 100 backstroke, his time of 54.24 three seconds faster than the runner-up. He finished fourth in the 200 freestyle with a personal record time of 1:53.04. And he swam the first leg of the 200 medley relay, which touched the wall first with a pool record time of 1:37.42. The old mark was 1:41.54.

Nicole Stofko – Scranton women’s swimming (Parkland):

The sophomore diver prepped for this weekend’s Landmark Conference Championsh­ip by posting a pair of victories to lead the Royals to a 156-143 conference victory over Drew on Jan. 27 in Madison, New Jersey. Stofko finished first in the 1-meter dive with a score of 184.96 and came out on top in the 3-meter dive with a score of 206.93. She finished fourth in the 1-meter in last year’s championsh­ip. Scranton finished the

dual meet season with an 11-1 record.

Lindsay Berger – Holy Cross (Mass.) women’s basketball (Parkland):

The 6-foot-2 junior is doing a standout job coming off the bench for the Crusaders who are 14-8 overall and 8-3 in the Patriot League after a 74-68 league loss to American last Saturday in Washington, D.C. Berger had 12 points, three rebounds and three assists. Playing all 22 games with just two starts, she is averaging 7.7 points and 6.5 rebounds with 23 assists, nine steals and a teamhigh 23 blocked shots. Berger had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds in a 62-54 win over Brown on Nov. 9.

Richard Fronheiser –King’s wrestling (Lehighton):

The junior is having a strong season in the 197-pound weight class for the Monarchs who are 5-5 in dual action after a going 3-0 in the Scranton Duals last Saturday. Fronheiser went 2-0 with a pin in :44 seconds and a 17-0 major decision. He finished third at the Middle Atlantic Conference Championsh­ip Jan. 20 in York. He is 24-9 and has a second, another third and a fourth in three other tourneys during the season. His career record to date, is 57-28.

Lauren Bunke –Lebanon Valley women’s track (Bethlehem Catholic):

The graduate student finished first out of 22 entrants at Franklin & Marshall’s Blue and White Invite last Saturday in Lancaster. She posted a time of 5:09.27. She was named Middle Atlantic Conference Women’s Track Runner of the Week on Jan. 22 after finishing first in the 3,000-meter run at the River Hawk Invite on Jan. 20 in Selinsgrov­e with a personal record time of 10:17.58. Sophomore teammate Autumn Garges (Southern Lehigh) finished fourth in the 800 (2:25.16) at the Blue and White meet.

Delaney Porter – Bloomsburg women’s track (Pen Argyl):

The graduate student had a solid effort for the Huskies at the River Hawk Friday Night Showdown in Selinsgrov­e. Porter posted a personal record time of 8.25 to finish third in the 60- meter dash and was second in the 200-meter dash with a time of 27.35. Porter rounded out the night by running a leg on the winning 4×400 relay which crossed the line in 4:14.28. Her finishes in both the 60 and 200 were her best this winter.
