AMHERST — Lorin G. Knieriemen, age 90, of Amherst, passed away Sunday, September 16, 2012 at New Life Residentia­l Hospice Center in Lorain.

He was born on August 31, 1922 in Bucyrus, Ohio to Alvin Knieriemen and Elizabeth (nee Tobin) Knieriemen Brown.

Lorin graduated from Sycamore High School in 1940. In 1942, he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corp. He served his country as a First Lieutenant pilot flying a B-24 Heavy Bomber in 33 missions during World War II. He was Honorably Discharged on November 6, 1945. Upon his discharge he went on to further his education at the University of Toledo earning his degree in Industrial Engineerin­g and graduating in 1950.

He was employed by U.S. Steel, retiring in 1983 after 33 years of service. He was a member of the Amherst Congregati­onal United Church of Christ, the Boy Scouts of America, the Amherst Planning and Zoning Commission­s, and Junior Achievemen­t. He enjoyed woodworkin­g, traveling through 49 States (not Hawaii) and playing cards with his family and friends.

He is survived by his sons Jeffrey N. and wife Cheryl, of Lutz, Fla. and Dale A., of Clarksvill­e, Tenn.; and grandchild­ren Eric, Kristen, Melissa and Todd.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Jean (nee Curlis); parents Alvin and Elizabeth; and brothers Gerald and Don.

The Knieriemen family will receive family and friends on Friday, September 21, 2012 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. in the Dovin and Reber Jones Funeral & Cremation Center, 1110 Cooper Foster Park Road, Amherst where services will take place Friday at 7:00 p.m. following the visitation. Rev. Attila Szemesi, Pastor of Amherst Congregati­onal Church, will officiate. Graveside services will take place Saturday, September 22 at 2:00 p.m. at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Sycamore, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributi­ons be made in memory of Lorin, to New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph, 5255 North Abbe Road, Elyria, Ohio 44035.
