AMHERST — Mary Lu Hamrick (nee: Smith), 70, of Amherst, died Sept. 17, 2012, at Specialty Hospital of Lorain following a brief illness.

Mary Lu was born August 10, 1942, in Lorain, Ohio where she was raised, graduating from Lorain High School with the class of 1960. In 1961, she moved to Amherst where she has made her home since.

As a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Mary Lu served as a Eucharist minister and a reader of the Novena at Saturday masses. Throughout her lifetime she worked at Amherst Drug Mart in the pharmacy department and at Dr. Yuzon’s office. She enjoyed gathering with her family, staying in touch via email and Facebook, caring for her husband, and playing cards with friends. Her other interests included playing bingo, shopping and enjoying the company of her dogs.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband of fiftyone years Edward Hamrick; son Eddie Hamrick, of Lorain; daughters Laura (Paul) Giambra, of Fredericks­burg, Va. and Linda Thomas, of Lorain; eight grandchild­ren; and sister Patricia Smith, of Belleville, Ill.

Mary Lu was preceded in death by parents Edward and Helen Smith (nee: Lewandowsk­i).

Friends may call Friday, September 21 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Closing prayers will take place at the funeral home Saturday, September 22 at 9:30 a.m. with a Mass of Christian burial to follow at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Dr., Amherst, Ohio 44001. The Rev. Fr. Michael Denk will officiate. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain, Ohio.
