Norwalk sending six to district

The Northwest Division I sectional tournament­s were completed on Oct. 4, and Norwalk will send six girls to the district tournament.

Norwalk’s Lauren Ott defeated Ashland’s Angie Rosby, 6-2, 6-1, in the first singles championsh­ip to take the No. 1 seed slot at the district tournament. Lauren Steffanni beat Ashland’s Kaelin Frazee in the consolatio­n final to secure the No. 3 seed.

Norwalk’s doubles pairs of Karlee Talkington and Johnna Thomas, and Anessa Berry and Kaitlyn Stoll, will head to the district tournament as the second and third seeds respective­ly.

Perkins’ Olivia Rohrbacher swept through her competitio­n as the No. 1 seed, defeating Port Clinton’s Alyssa Krupp, 6-0, 6-2, in the final.

Perkins’ doubles duo of Priscilla Nguyen and Carlee Vaughn were defeated in a semifinal by Clyde’s Emi Nearhood and Emi Bowers.

The Division II Rocky River Sectional took place Oct. 1-2, and Hathaway Brown swept the board.

Lauren Gillinov secured the first singles victory over Danielle Buchinsky, 6-1, 6-2. On the doubles side, Hathaway Brown duo Catherine Areklett and Ally Persky beat Laurel’s Berthy Feng and Ellen Hata, 6-2, 6-0.

Elyria Catholic’s Callie Lopez reached the second round, while teammate Katie Scarvelli fell in Round 3.

Vermilion’s Amanda Aron and Emmy Adkins fell in the first round, while Melanie McHenry also lost in the second round. Doubles pair Lauren Opalenik and Rachel Stevens made it to the second round before losing out to Cuyahoga Valley Christian Academy. Alyssa Beck and Caroline Heitz won a hardfought battle over St. Vincent-St. Mary, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6, but fell in the third round to Beaumont.

Lake Ridge sent three singles players to the sectional tournament — Katie Hatcher, Riya Lakkaraju and Sarah Freeman — but all fell in the first and second rounds. Doubles pair Katie Humphreys and Gretchen Norton fell to Elyria Catholic in the first round.

Vermilion’s doubles duo of Fiona Gibbons and Lauren Hollars reached the third round, defeating pairs from Fairview and Padua in the first and second rounds. Gibbons and Hollars fell, 6-0, 6-0, to Areklett and Persky in the third round. Lauren Pawloski and Desiree Reutter fell to Padua in the second round after defeating Lake Ridge in Round 1.
