An Elyria woman was relaxing in her home on Oct. 7 when she noticed an unrecognizable face peering around the corner into her bedroom.

At about 2:36 a.m., the 55-year-old woman said she retreated to her upstairs bedroom after grabbing a bite to eat from the kitchen.

A short time later, she heard noises coming from downstairs, prompting her to dial 911.

T h e woman told a dispatcher that she could hear someone tampering with a window, and believed someone was trying to break into her home.

Officers arrived at the Warren Avenue home, where they apprehended Benjermen Krugman, 28, of 161 Boston Ave., and the woman’s 27- year- old son, Dewann Matear, 135 Gulf Road, after the two tried to flee through the rear of the residence, police said.

Matear admitted to an officer that he and Krugman broke into his mother’s home and attempted to steal her television so he could sell it for crack cocaine, according to Elyria police.

The woman said her son has a history of drug use and never lived at her residence.

Officers searched the home and located an open window with its lock damaged, police said.

Matear and Krugman each were charged with one count of burglary, a second-degree felony.

They were transported to Lorain County Jail, where they are being held without bond.

Both men were scheduled to appear in Elyria Municipal Court on Oct. 7, according to jail records.
