- -— Staff reports

A Lorain man’s dog had to be euthanized after being shot by an unknown person after the dog ran outside and toward the shooter

Police responded to the 100 block of East 23rd Street at 9:23 p m after receiving a call about a resident who reported that his dog had been shot

Upon arrival, the owner informed police that the dog broke loose after charging the door when he went to take the dog outside and put it on a chain

The owner stated that the dog was friendly and often approached neighbors in the area and that it was not the first time the dog had gotten loose

After charging out the door, the owner said the dog approached a man wearing dark pants and a black hooded sweatshirt who was walking down an alley along the side of the owner’s residence

The owner said that the shooter warned him he would shoot his dog if it approached him Before he had a chance to respond to say that the dog was friendly, he heard a “pop” and the shooter then ran northeast through the alley and nearby yards toward Elyria Avenue

After arriving on the scene, police said they examined the dog and found it to be alive and nonaggressive The dog received a gunshot wound to the left eye, which exited out of the back of the animal’s neck

The dog was transported to the Animal Emergency Clinic on Grove Avenue and after examination, the vet informed the owner that the most humane thing to do was to euthanize the animal

No charges have been filed
