Former county sheriff sentenced to 2 year probation
Former Lorain County Sheriff Sgt. Donald McCurry was sentenced to two years probation after pleading guilty to misdemeanor assault charges.
According to Lorain County Common Pleas Court documents filed Dec. 17, McCurry, 48, also will serve 30 days of house arrest after a conviction for assault and dereliction of duty Oct. 28.
McCurry originally was charged with felonious assault in August 2013 after he allegedly threatened his daughter’s friend, Joseph Reiger, with his duty pistol and proceeded to hit him in the back of the head with a flashlight.
Reiger filed a lawsuit against McCurry in July. The suit also names McCurry’s daughter, Ashley McCurry, as a defendant.
According to the lawsuit, McCurry stopped by the home while he was on duty to check the house when he saw the lights on.
Upon entering his residence, McCurry found his daughter and Reiger there and immediately told Reiger to get off of his property. McCurry then assaulted Reiger as he was attempting to leave, Lorain County Prosecutor Dennis Will said.
Ashley McCurry took Reiger to the hospital, where he had to get stitches on his head, Will added.
As part of his sentence, Lorain County Common Pleas Judge Christopher Rothgery ordered McCurry to surrender his law enforcement certificate and participate in anger management counseling.
