Medlen signs with the Royals

-

Former Atlanta right-hander Kris Medlen has agreed to an $8.5 million, two-year contract with the Kansas City Royals after missing last season while he recovered from Tommy John surgery.

Medlen will make $2 million next year and $5.5 million in 2016 under the agreement announced Thursday and could earn up to $10 million in performance bonuses based on starts and innings.

The deal includes a 2017

49ers coach Jim Harbaugh is declining to respond to reports that he is weighing an offer from Michigan to become the new football coach at his alma mater.

Harbaugh has one season remaining on the $25 million, five-year contract he signed in January 2011.

Several media outlets, including ESPN and the NFL Network, have reported Harbaugh has a six-year offer on the table from the Wolverines.

San Francisco general manager Trent Baalke said this week that a decision on Harbaugh’s future would come after the season.

The Niners (7-7) were eliminated from playoff contention in last Sunday’s 17-7 loss at Seattle, giving them their first three-game losing streak under Harbaugh.

San Francisco had reached three straight NFC championship games, losing the Super

Bowl after the 2012 season.

Seahawks’ Wright signs extension

The conversations started in the spring and as much as K.J. Wright wanted to believe the Seattle Seahawks legitimately wanted to keep him around long-term, the fact the season started and weeks ticked by without a contract extension began weighing on the linebacker.

The stress and worry about his future was alleviated on Thursday after Wright signed a four-year extension worth up to $27 million with the Seahawks, keeping one of Seattle’s key defensive players from reaching free agency.
