LORAIN – Antonio “Tony” Zapata, 87, of Lorain, d i e d We d n e s - d a y December 17, 2014 at Mercy New Life Hospice Center of St. Joseph in Lorain.

He was born April 22, 1927 in Corpus Christi, Texas and had resided in the Lorain area over 60 years.

Tony attended Laredo Junior College in Texas for two years. He served with the US Army 3706th Army Air Forces Base Unit during World War II. He received the WWII Victory Medal.

Tony worked as a barber at Zack’s Barbershop in Cleveland and Bill’s Barbershop in Lorain. Later, he worked at Midland Steel in Cleveland as a maintenanc­e welder for 42 years before retiring.

He was a member of Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, AMVETS Post #47 and VFW Post #451, all of Lorain and AMVETS Post # 55 in Amherst. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchild­ren, family gatherings, and golf, traveling and casino bus trips.

He is survived by his daughter Toni Ristic (Nebojsa) of Sheffield Village, grandchild­ren Natalie and Alexander Ristic and companion of 10 years Diane Mann of Lorain. He was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years Emma Zapata (nee Estrada) in 1997, daughter Robin Zapata in 1981, brother Philip Zapata and sister Siria Morales.

The family will receive friends Sunday 4-8 pm at the Gluvna- Shimo- Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Funeral services will be held Monday at 9:30 am in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 1454 Lexington Ave, Lorain. The Rev. Robert Glepko, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the VFW Post #451 and American Legion # 30 of Lorain will conduct military honors.
