Milestone

September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and on Sept. 27, Avon hosted Midview in a charity match to spread awareness.

Last year, the Eagles raised over $7,000 for the Prayers from Maria foundation — a “children’s glioma cancer foundation dedicated to funding research into the causes, treatments, and cure for deadly childhood brain tumors known as gliomas.”

“This year, our goal was to give back to the community,” Avon coach Julie Radigan said. “The girls volunteered their time working at the sunflower field and really did a phenomenal job raising funds for a great cause.

“At some point, we all need to recognize that athletics are about more than a game.

“Events like this make playing a game seem minuscule compared to the struggles childhood cancer patients and families go through. I am so proud of the entire Avon volleyball family and the hard work, time, and energy spent to make this year’s charity event truly special.”

The players sponsored different events throughout the week and sold 50/50 tickets around the community.

Elyria setter Rachel Holliday reached a milestone in her volleyball career on Sept. 24 as the senior recorded her 1,000th assist in a match against Chardon.

Holliday had 31 assists in the Pioneers’ most recent match with Brunswick,

bringing her total to 568 on the year.

The 5-foot-6 senior has recorded 40-plus assists in seven games this season — including a season-high 62 on Sept. 1 in Elyria’s first meeting with Brunswick — and is currently the No. 1-ranked setter in the Morning Journal coverage area, averaging 10.9 assists per set.

In Division I, Avon (14-0) falls in at No. 9 — good for the highest ranking in the area — with 116 votes, while No. 14 Elyria (16-1) received 42 votes. The Pioneers topped No. 12 Strongsville on Sept. 22 and face No. 17 Solon and No. 19 Mentor in the final two weeks of the regular season.

Lutheran West moved up two spots in the D-III poll to No. 10.

The Longhorns are 15-0.
