Local official Democrats rip Trump after son visits city

- By Richard Payerchin

There were no protesters to meet Eric Trump, son of Republican presidential candidate Donald J. Trump, when he arrived in Lorain Oct. 18.

The elder Trump has been locked in a bitter campaign with Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton. Two local Democrats issued their own statements supporting their candidate and denouncing the Republican contender.

In addition to recently surfaced footage of Trump saying demeaning things about women, a Newsweek investigation found Trump purchased Chinese steel and aluminum for his construction projects instead of using U.S. or Lorain steel. At the second presidential debate Trump admitted he had avoided paying federal income taxes for years, according to a statement from the Hillary Clinton campaign.

“As a woman, as a leader in my community, I’m disgusted by the recently surfaced audio of Donald Trump discussing sexual assault. What’s more insulting is that he and his family members continue to dismiss those comments as ‘locker room talk’,” said Elyria Councilwoman Brenda Davis. “Ohioans know that Hillary Clinton is the most qualified person ever to run for President, and come election day, they will unite behind her and reject Trump’s message of hate and divisiveness.”

State Rep. Dan Ramos, D-Lorain, said Trump “openly slighted the people of Lorain” by buying Chinese steel.

“This was cheaper for him, but behavior like that is bad for America,” Ramos said.

“Eric Trump is here campaigning for his father, as my family has campaigned for me. But while my family was also interested in helping the people of Ohio, Eric is campaigning for Donald and promoting a tax pan that will disproportionately benefit his own family and business,” Ramos said.

“The Trumps are only interested in helping the Trumps,” he said. “Secretary Hillary Clinton is interested in helping all of us. She has a plan to make the largest investment in job creation since World War II that would create hundreds of thousands of jobs right here in Ohio.”
