Boys and Girls Clubs takes part in Cavs program
Thirty Lorain youth travelled to Cleveland on Jan. 19 to take part in the Cleveland Cavaliers Fit as a Pro Program.
A partnership between the Cavs and the Boys and Girls Clubs of Lorain County provided the opportunity for the youngsters to travel to Cleveland for the game against the Phoenix Suns.
The Cavs defeated the Suns, 118-103.
According to the Cavs official website, the Fit as a Pro Program is a yearround campaign designed to encourage physical fitness and well-balanced nutrition among elementary and middle school students in northeast Ohio.
The program reaches thousands of area students through fitness challenges, nutrition education and information on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle.
The event at the Quicken Loans Arena involved the group taking part in a 30-minute training session with the Scream Team, the team’s hip-hop dance squad.
The Cavs team bus picked up the youngsters at the organization’s Desich Family Campus, 4111 Pearl Ave. in Lorain.
Each participant received a T-shirt, water bottle and a pair of Dr. Dre’s Beats headphones.
Mike Conibear, executive director of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Lorain County, said the initiative builds upon a 10-year relationship with the Cavs.
Conibear said the youngsters were excited to ride on the bus and participate in a structured program.
“This is the second event as part of this latest initiative, and it aligns with our organizational standards on health and fitness,” he said.
Over the summer, more than 40 youth involved with the Boys and Girls Club travelled to Cleveland and took part in a training session led by Cavs small forward Richard Jefferson along with center and 3-point specialist Channing Frye.
The program follows the NBA Fit Week, which is a comprehensive program put together by the league to encourage wellness activities.
