A dozen local women were honored as Silver Foxes at a 6th annual Women’s Legacy Tea April 8 in Lorain.

The tea was hosted by National Council of Negro Women Inc. at Knights Center at 1620 Kansas Avenue.

Honorees included Marie Bonaminio, Anner Ruth Brown, Margaret T. Bulzomi, Alma M. Campbell, Catherine M. Catanzarite, Anna M. Cruz, Florence Heath, Betty R. Hogan, Olla M. Miller, Evelyn Patton, Vivian Theresa Reeves, and Annie R. Rodgers.

The organization also honored Mildren Lee as a Legacy Life member, said Sylvia DuVall.

“Legacy Life means you have pledged and done a great deal for NCNW,” DuVall said. “The NCNW partnered with the City of Lorain and with Invest Lorain. We have three projects. We want to bring vitality to the City of Lorain.”

DuVall encouraged attendees to take photographs

of their gardens to submit to a website for Invest Lorain at https://investlorain.org/, to change an impression many people have of Lorain, she said.

“This has nothing to do with the government. The government isn’t going to do it,” DuVall said. “Individual citizens in the city

are working on this. Every ward in the city is going to have an award. We want to see some of our people getting awards.”

Duvall also encouraged people to adopt a square in downtown Lorain, to plant a tree or flowers and to beautify the business district.

“We’re thinking if a city is beautiful and in bloom, then maybe people will come downtown,” DuVall said. “You can plant something in memory of someone, or just on your own. It’s up to you.”

She led a moment of silence for family members and loved ones no longer available to them.

Joanne Eldridge, retired director of Lorain Public Library, spoke on the value of a seasoned woman who seasons the lives of others.

Charlita Anderson White and Luther Trammell played several blues selections. Anderson-White said after battling cancer she learned harmonica four years ago as a promise to herself to play music. She carried the harmonica around for awhile before someone told her to take the instrument out of her purse and place it up to her mouth. So she did.

“It’s the greatest thing ever,” Anderson-White said. “I’m so glad I started.”

Trammell played blues guitar and sang.

“I’ve known Luther for ever,” Anderson-White said. “I enjoy going to see blues performers. I had a band. I sang. We became friends. That way when I started playing guitar, he said, ‘Come out with me and play. We’re playing the blues. I’ll take care of you. If you mess up, no one will ever know. We’re playing the blues. Don’t worry about what you’re playing. Play what you’re hearing.’ ”
