Planet Fitness to open April 10

Planet Fitness is ready to open in Lorain.

The fitness center will open at noon April 10, said Ashley Sanborn, director of marketing for the Dover, N.H.-based workout company.

The center is located at 2000 Cooper Foster Park Road in the former Sears Appliance & Hardware store, which was included with a company-wide list of stores to close in 2015.

“We’re really excited and many of the members seem really excited for it,” Sanborn said. “We’re excited to be part of this community.”

A grand opening celebratio­n tentativel­y is scheduled for May 10.

Planet Fitness has an office open for pre-sale membership­s at 1980 Cooper Foster Park Road. The presale store hours this weekend are 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The fitness center chain was founded in 1992 by brothers Michael and Marc Grondahl, according to the company history.

It became known for “a welcoming, non intimidati­ng environmen­t, which we call the Judgement Free Zone,” according to informatio­n from the company’s website.

As of Sept. 30, 2016, Planet Fitness had more than 8.7 million members in more than 1,200 stores in 47 states, Puerto Rico, Canada and the Dominican Republic.

Around Lorain, the nearest Planet Fitness clubs are in Elyria, North Olmsted and Rocky River, according to the company website.
