JVS prepares for greenhouse sale

- By Kelsey Leyva

Blooming blossoms and green leaves fill the greenhouse at the Lorain County Joint Vocational School, 15181 state Route 58 in Oberlin, as students in the landscape and greenhouse management program prepare for the annual spring sales.

Starting April 24, the community is invited to visit to the greenhouse to pick from a variety of vegetables and flowers grown by the 18 students participating in the program.

Beth Berthold, instructor for the landscape and greenhouse management program, said the annual spring greenhouse sale is one of the youngest initiatives in the building as students got to sell plants for the first time in March 2006.

Madeline Rising, a 17-year-old senior in the program, said she and her fellow classmates had a hand in growing annuals such as geraniums, begonias, petunias and violas. Vegetable options include peppers, onions and tomatoes.

“We’re trying to get rid of everything,” Madeline said. “It normally sells out quick, which is awesome.”

Berthold said the proceeds generated by annual sale go directly back to the greenhouse to purchase bigger and better plants for next year.

“We want to be able to follow the trends in the industry,” she said.

Prices range from $2 to $25, depending on size and variety. Typical operating hours are 8-11 a.m. and noon to 1:30 p.m. on school days.

The greenhouse also will open from 8 a.m. to noon, May 13, for
