Student accused of assaulting officers

A 12-year-old Southview Middle School student accused of punching, kicking and spitting on safety officers is facing criminal charges in juvenile court, according to a Lorain police report.

Around 12:30 p.m. May 11, Lorain officers responded to the school at 2321 Fairless Drive for two students fighting, the report said.

The school’s safety officers explained a teacher was holding the male student back when they attempted to take control of the situation, the report said.

The sixth-grader is accused of punching the groin and spitting in the face of one safety officer and kicking the right leg and left shin of another while they attempted to place the boy in handcuffs, the report said. When Lorain police officers arrived, the report said the boy cursed at them and attempted to get free.

The boy’s mother explained her son is diagnosed with bipolar disorder and attention deficit disorder, but agreed something needed to be done, according to the report.

The boy was issued a summons on disorderly conduct and assault. The school will handle the incident internally.

Police investigate vehicle shooting

The Elyria Police Department is investigating an alleged road rage incident where a white Jeep Cherokee sustained three bullet holes, according to Elyria police Capt. Christopher Costantino.

Around 7:24 p.m. May 6, dispatch informed officers a woman called in claiming her son was shot near Ely Stadium on Middle Avenue, but officers checked the area and were unable to locate the victim or caller.

A short time later, dispatch received a second call about shots fired in the area of Washington Avenue and Depot Street, Costantino said.

At that intersection, officers made contact with the 22-year-old Elyria man who explained a black male passenger in a Kia with tinted windows shot at his vehicle, Costantino said.

The victim’s Jeep sustained damage to the hood and front windshield, but the victim was uninjured, he said.

The victim explained the Kia, which was driven by a black female, was swerving and cut him off, so he yelled at the driver and began following her. While on Depot Street, the Kia’s male passenger climbed out of the window, produced a black hand gun and began firing shots while both vehicles were moving.

The shooting suspect is described as a light skinned black male with dark curly hair and a scruffy beard who was wearing a gray sweatshirt and jeans or khakis, Costantino said.

There was a delay in police response because the victim first contacted his mother in Lorain, Costantino said.

Anyone with any additional information is asked to contact the Elyria Police Department at 440323-3302.

Fire destroys maintenance building

An early morning fire in Carlisle Township destroyed a maintenance building at the Carlisle Golf Club on May 11.

Multiple units responded to a structure fire at the Carlisle Golf Club at 39709 Slife Road shortly after midnight on May 11 in Carlisle Township.

Carlisle Township Fire Chief Kevin Dembiec said the fire took several hours to put out and crews were still dealing with hot spots up until 7 a.m. Dembiec indicated the fire proved difficult to knock down due to a number of chemicals located in the building including oils, paints and golf cart tires.

Dembiec said there are no reported injuries and an investigation is ongoing. Fire officials believe the blaze started in a workspace inside the building.

Units from Eaton Township, Elyria, Grafton, Grafton Township, LaGrange, Oberlin, South Amherst and Wellington also responded to provide mutual aid.
