Novel published shortly before Christmas 2016

Creativity has always been Sara Coast’s niche and there is not much she hasn’t done.

Coast, of North Olmsted, has been a teacher, painter and a jeweler long before she found herself focused on the written word.

“I’ve been a jeweler for many years, but I retired from making jewelry when I published the book,” she said. “I am enjoying writing equally as much as making jewelry.”

In 2016, Coast published her first mystery spy novel, which took four years to write, called “What You Don’t Know Will Hurt You.”

The book was published a little before

Christmas, she said.

Although this is her first published book, Coast said she has been writing since the 1980s.

“I was writing newspaper articles in the 80s,” she said. “My husband, Roger Coast, is a well-known artist in the Cleveland area.

“We traveled extensively and I would write the articles and he would provide the art for the stories. They were published in the travel/adventure section of the Cleveland Plain Dealer at the time.”

She said she and her husband traveled to places including Spain, Maine, Florida and the Amazon River.

Coast said she also wrote poetry and won poetry contests at the Dearborn Street Book Festival and Charlotte Book Festival in Florida. “I got third place at the Dearborn Street Book Festival, and I did the same in Port Charlotte,” she said.

While at the Dearborn Festival, Coast met James Abraham of Broker Publishing who published her book.

“He helped me a lot,” she said. “He help me to make my book a little more concise.”

“What You Don’t Know Will Hurt You” explores the life of Sheriff Jake Mason, who finds love and danger when he meets super-agent Grace Cooper.

“It’s a mystery, but also has a little romance in it,” Coast said.

The setting of the book took place in Maine because she said she familiar with the state.

“I was inspired by Maine because that is where my father is from,” Coast said. “My father was really into Sherlock Holmes and he inspired me because mystery has been a part of my life since I was a little girl.

“I just love solving mysteries — I don’t know why, but I just do.”

James Patterson, Sue Grafton and early works of Stephen King are some of her favorites, she said.

Coast plans to continue writing and even has a sequel planned for the book.

“The book is openended, so that I can continue writing and I have started writing part two,” she said. “I will still use the same characters, but it will be different.”
