Mexican Mutual Society hosts its annual steak dinner
Promoting and helping Lorain County students get the proper education is a priority to the Mexican Mutual Society.
“We want to help students get the education they deserve, and also show them how important education is,” Mia Arredondo, member and co-chair, said.
Members of the organization came together to celebrate its annual scholarship awards steak fry dinner on July 22 at Mexican Mutual Society Club, 1820 E. 28th St. in Lorain.
Each year, the organization awards three students a scholarship worth $500, Arredondo said.
“Helping the youth is important to us and this
allows us to give back to them,” she said.
Students who are Lorain County residents, hold at least a 2.8 GPA, are of Mexican descent and have a family member in Mexican Mutual Society qualify for the scholarship.
“We really just want to promote education to our youth,” she said.
All of the proceeds from the steak fry go towards the scholarships.
Lorain Ward 6 Councilman and member Angel Arroyo Jr. said the Mexican Mutual Society is highly important to the Hispanic community.
“This is the only Hispanic
club open, since the Puerto Rican home closed,” he said. “It’s important to the community because it encourages the Hispanic culture and raises funds to send our kids to school. It is really beneficial to the community.”
This year the organization awarded scholarships to Alejandro Reyes, Jem Garcia, and Taylor Soto.
Past scholarship recipient Brittany Ruiz-Remaklus offered encouraging words to this year’s awardees.
Arredondo encourages people to join the society, and if interested call 440277-7375.
Mexican Mutual Society was founded in 1928 as a benefit society to assist Mexican immigrants who settled in Lorain primarily to work at us steel factory.
